Mobile Computing - FAQ
Mobile Computing SoftwareYou will find the answers to some of the most frequentlly asked questions here. However, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have a question which is not covered.
1) What are the benefits of using handheld / electronic data collection?
Benefits vary depending on your requirement but typically include: significant cost savings; increased efficiency; reduction in man hours required to tackle specific jobs; reduced administration costs; increase in data accuracy; ability to trend readings; access time to data is significantly reduced; provides a paperless environment.
2) What should I consider when choosing a handheld computer?
Every requirement is different but factors to consider are: weight; size; robustness; input method (touch screen, keypad etc); backlight requirement; battery life; scanning capability; weather conditions to be used in etc. Whilst this may seem like a daunting task, we're here to help you choose the handheld computers that best suit you and your team.
3) What's the difference between RF and Batch?
RF (Radio Frequency) uses a wireless network to receive and send data. For example, when a plant engineer is moving around site, he can talk to the database to ask it for the relevant inspection form rather than having to ensure it has been previously downloaded. As soon as the inspection is completed, the data can be sent straight back to the database so it's immediately accessible by others.
Batch requires a connection between the PC and handheld computer so that data can be exchanged between the two. This means that forms have to be downloaded via the PC before an engineer embarks on an inspection routine and the data will not be available until the engineer can connect the handheld computer and PC again.
4) Do I need barcode scanning?
If you regularly add or change assets such as equipment, containers, locations etc and these assets have routine tasks associated with them you will benefit from a handheld computer with barcode scanning capability. Barcode data collection further increases efficiency and reduces errors associated with paper based data collection.
Moreover, TransForm includes an interface to BarTender, providing you with the facility to create and print your own labels. This gives you the power to specify and change the information you want on each and every label you create, including barcodes where required, and provides further cost reductions for printing.
